Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project ‘on track’

The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project is on the right track, in accordance with the vision of the two Heads of State, said Thursday, the Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with Parliament, government spokesman, Mustapha Baitas.

Speaking at a press briefing at the end of the Government Council, convened under the chairmanship of the Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, Baitas noted that the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project is part of a strategic partnership between the two countries, in accordance with the vision set out by King Mohammed VI and Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

The studies carried out or in progress relate in particular to the engineering of the project, indicated the minister, specifying that the new studies concern environmental and social issues.

It should be recalled that Morocco and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OPEC Fund) recently signed the legal documentation relating to the financing of part of the second phase of the detailed preliminary design studies of the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, which aims to become a catalyst for economic development in the North West African region.

“Mrs. Nadia Fettah, Minister of Economy and Finance proceeded, by exchange of correspondence, with Abdulhamid Al khalifa, Managing Director of the OPEC Fund and Mrs. Amina Benkhadra, Managing Director of ONHYM, to the signature of the legal documentation relating to the financing, in the amount of 14.3 million dollars, granted by the OPEC Fund to ONHYM as part of its contribution to the financing of the second phase of the detailed preliminary design study ( FEED – Front-End engineering design) of the Gas Pipeline linking the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Morocco (NMGP Project),” the Ministry of Economy and Finance said in a statement.

The study, co-financed with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), consists of preparing the documentation for the execution of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project and finalizing the related technical, financial and legal analyses.

The Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline strategic project, initiated by King Mohammed VI and President Buhari, and whose cooperation agreement was signed in May 2017, aims to be a catalyst for economic development in the northern region. – West Africa.
