Nigeria/elections: the African Union sends an observation mission

The African Union Commission on Tuesday announced the dispatch of a 90-person observer mission to Nigeria for the February 25 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) will be headed by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, the same source said.

The latter helped broker an agreement to end two years of war in northern Ethiopia and is mediating in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The objectives of the EUEOM observation mission are to provide an “accurate and impartial assessment” of the electoral process, to propose recommendations for any improvement in future polls and to display the AU’s support “for the consolidation of democracy , peace, stability and development in Nigeria,” the Commission added.

Nearly 100 million people are called to vote on February 25 to choose a successor to President Muhammadu Buhari who is stepping down following two terms – as provided for by the Constitution – new deputies and senators
.
Voters will be called on March 11 to choose governors and members of local assemblies.
