The ECOWAS Court of Justice ordered the Nigerien junta to immediately and unconditionally release President Mohamed Bazoum, detained with his wife and son since the coup d’état of July 26, 2023, as well as his return to power.
The members of the Court meeting this Friday, December 15 in Abuja, Nigeria, considered that several rights of the deposed president and his family have been violated, in particular that of coming and going since they have been held at the presidential residence for more than 4 month.
They also recalled that Bazoum’s political rights were violated. This is why the judges demand the restoration of constitutional order in Niger and the handing over of state power to the overthrown president. Present at this meeting, the defense of the State of Niger asked the court to declare itself “incompetent” to declare the request “inadmissible”.

It should still be noted that if this West African organization continues to demand the release of the overthrown president, it now seems that the coup d’état has taken place. The ECOWAS Court of Justice sets a deadline of one month for the new Nigerien authorities, from notification, to report on the execution of its decision.
