The delegation was to hold talks with the new rulers in the Nigerien capital Niamey today, as reported by the magazine “Jeune Afrique”. The mediators also wanted to meet President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been under military arrest since July 26. But the junta strictly rejected the trip, citing “the current context of popular anger and uproar as a result of the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS, which does not allow the said delegation to be received in peace.”
After the coup, the West African Economic Community ECOWAS issued an ultimatum by August 6 to reinstate the ousted President Bazoum and threatened to intervene. Since the ultimatum has expired, the heads of the ECOWAS countries, whose leading power is Nigeria, will discuss how to proceed on Thursday.
