While until then it considered Mohamed Bazoum as the President of the Republic, ECOWAS ended up admitting the coup d’état orchestrated by the CNSP led by General Abdourahamane Tiany.

“Until its 64th Ordinary Session held on December 10, 2023, the conference of heads of state and government saw the situation in Niger as an attempted coup d’état and still considered HE Mohamed Bazoum as the President of the Republic », Specified ECOWAS in a press release, this Thursday, December 14, 2023.

As a result, Niger continued to enjoy its rights to sit on the decision-making bodies of ECOWAS and members of Bazoum’s government were still authorized to represent their country at statutory meetings.

Finally, the institution admitted the coup and decided, not only, to suspend Niamey from these authorities until the return to constitutional order in the country.

On July 26, 2023, the presidential guard overthrew the regime of President Mohamed Bazoum.

The sub-regional organization had threatened to intervene militarily to restore the deposed president to power. This contributed to sour relations between the Nigerien junta and ECOWAS.
