Nicolas Sarkozy in the stands as PSG lost in the Champions League | Champions League

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has a special relationship with PSG and the Qatari owners.

For example, Sarkozy, according to former Fifa president Sepp Blatter, played a decisive role in Qatar getting the 2022 World Cup.

After a lunch with the Qatari emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Sarkozy is said to have recommended the then Uefa president Michel Platini to vote for Qatar.

During the Wednesday evening, the relationship was visible once more. Sarkozy appeared at Signal Iduna Park in Germany alongside PSG’s Qatari president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

Füllkrug lowered PSG

What they discussed is unclear, but they cannot have been overjoyed by the Champions League semi-final result.

PSG lost 1–0 to Borussia Dortmund. Niclas Füllkrug scored the only goal of the match. The return will be played next week.

Nicolas Sarkozy has a history of controversy behind him. In 2021, he was sentenced to three years in prison (two years suspended, and one year under house arrest) for corruption following he bribed a judge.

He is expected to appear in court once more next year, when he during his 2007 presidential campaign is suspected of having received money from Libya’s then dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi.
