Mayor of the Cité du Doudou since 2018, Nicolas Martin studied at the FDF (now Défi), notably occupying the presidency of the youth section of the party. He was spotted by the PS, which he joined in 2000 on the municipal lists. Having just graduated in political science from the Fucams, he was elected municipal councilor with 900 votes in preference. He remained so until 2006, when he achieved the fifth score on the PS list and won an aldermanship.
With ever better electoral scores, Nicolas Martin returned in 2012 as alderman. He also holds the position of acting mayor, replacing Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo (PS), who was unable to attend at the time. He retained this position until 2014 when he entered the Walloon Parliament as a deputy. He combines his new function with his municipal aldermanship. In 2018, he finally won the mayorship in Mons and devoted himself entirely to his city.
An uncertain political future
At 46, this native of Hyon is a convinced regionalist. He would like to see the Belgian institutional landscape simplified, and the Region recover the community competences.
Almost a year before the municipal elections of October 2024, he defends his record but still hesitates to declare himself a candidate for re-election. “It’s a job which is exciting but which requires a total and permanent investment, he explained at the beginning of July. I cannot continue like this.” Facing him, the opposition is fiercely led by Georges-Louis Bouchez (president of the MR) and his Mons en Mieux list.
Nicolas Martin has announced that he will give himself the summer to reflect on his political future. In the meantime, many files remain on the table in Mons, such as the brand new crèches or the work on the station.
