The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, was sharp with his statements in which he categorically rejected the inclusion of his country in the list of drug producers, which includes Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Nicaragua, Panama, among others. This list was made by the United States and was released publicly last Thursday.

“In that infamous publication, the faithful fulfillment of the international commitments of the Bolivarian Government, whose tenor to address the permanent fight once morest illicit drug trafficking has been under the foundations of the United Nations, is unknown,” Maduro notified through the Foreign Ministry.

In addition, from the Bolivarian government they emphasized that they have sovereign policies, which have allowed them to have control of drug trafficking and its manufacture in their territory: “The Bolivarian Government has achieved, with sovereign policies, the largest seizures and confiscations in history and has waged a merciless war once morest drug traffickers and irregular groups outside the law, thus registering in 2021 the seizure record of 51 tons of drugs in more than 5,000 procedures”.

According to the statement from the North American country, the inclusion of Venezuela “It is not a reflection of the efforts made by your government once morest drugs or the level of cooperation with the United States,” confirms the statement.

In addition to the Latin American countries that appear on the list, other nations Afghanistan, Bahamas, Belize, Burma, India, Jamaica, Laos, Pakistan, as the main producers of drugs and their transit, which will have special observation by the government American by 2023.

Of course, for the Venezuelan government, the US position is unconscious, because despite the great efforts that have been made between the two nations, there is still a long way to go to establish a much more proactive and dynamic dialogue, which will allow to establish a stronger relationship with the world power, but also with the region.

On the Colombian side, the country registered a record increase in drug production during 2021, according to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, the production figure was registered at a total of 245,000 hectares and more of 1000 metric tons, which puts it among the countries with the worst numbers in the region along with its neighboring country of Peru.

The increase was 15% for 2020, since in the immediately previous year it was 212,000 hectares in total. At that time, the government of Iván Duque stated: “Now we have an opportunity to double down on our common goal of ending this destructive illicit economy. Colombia and the United States recognize that complex problems such as drug trafficking require long-term solutions and a comprehensive policy response.”

Now under the government of Gustavo Petro, the way is open for dialogue with different sectors of the conflict that are involved in drug trafficking, for which he recently stated: “We were now talking at length with General Laura Richardson… regarding the failure of the anti-drug policy. I think it should be called that, without fear: the policy that was called the war on drugs in the time of (Richard) Nixon has failed here.”
