The Venezuelan dictator Nicholas Maduroparticipated this Monday in the inauguration of the 49th period of sessions of the United Nations Human Rights Councilin Geneva, where he defended the Colombian businessman accused of being his figurehead, Alex Saabwho is imprisoned in United States accused of conspiring to launder money.
“Ambassador Álex Saab was illegally kidnapped in June 2020 in Cape Verde when he was on an official mission to bring food and medicine to Venezuela. On October 26, he was kidnapped by the US military and taken illegally to the state of Florida. His diplomatic immunity, his human rights, and his own physical integrity were violated. His process in a US court is riddled with serious vices and distortions“, said Mature remotely from Caracas.
Mature highlighted that Saab has been appointed official representative of his regime at the dialogue table in Mexico. “Consequently, his second kidnapping and his illegal extraction to the United States are a deliberate and cunning blow to the development and continuity of the dialogue process in Mexico.“, he claimed.
This is the first statement made Mature on Saab since in mid-February the US Justice revealed that the man from Barranquilla was an active collaborator of the agency of Drug Control Administration (give) between 2018 and 2019. The cooperation agreement between Saab and the give included providing law enforcement with United States information regarding the bribes he paid and the crimes he committed as part of his contracts with the Chavista regime.
The sanctions
The Chavista president insisted on accusing what he described as “the US imperialist elite and the neo-colonial elite of the European Union” of violating the human rights of Venezuelans with the sanctions imposed once morest his regime. He mentioned in particular the Bank of England, New Bank and Citi Bankto whom he pointed out to keep funds from the Republic withheld.
In addition, he attacked the international press accusing it of “criminalizing” his government and assured that there is an international campaign to promote an intervention in Venezuela using the migration crisis.
“We loudly reject this perverse campaign. And in the same way, I have the duty to reject the pretense of using the human rights system to replace governments that are not aligned with the West. National systems seek to be replaced by foreign interventionist mechanisms“, said.
