Nick de Vries made a sudden F1 debut from Williams as a substitute for Alexander Albon, who suffered from appendicitis at the 2022 F1 Italian Grand Prix. He recounted a last-minute call-up play in Monza.
Nick de Vries, who replaced Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel in Friday’s FP1, was due to start his day with F1 TV broadcast duties. However, things took a sudden turn when Alexander Albon was forced to withdraw due to appendicitis. It’s been a roller coaster day for him.
Nick de Vries entered qualifying with only 90 minutes of FP3, but when he advanced to Q2, he marked the 13th fastest time. The final will start from 8th on the grid.
“We were supposed to do a pre-qualifying show together!” Nick de Vries explained to F1 TV presenter Will Buxton.
“I was ready in the morning with coffee and porridge and things like that and I was playing in the Paddock Club, but things took a turn for the worse. I was informed just an hour and a half before the first session. “
Luckily Nick de Vries was driving for Williams in FP1 at the Spanish Grand Prix in May.
“So the turnaround was very quick, but the team has been great and very supportive. Of course I hope Alex is healthy and recovers quickly, but I can’t help but be happy.”
