The Genesis of a Unique Sound

Archyde News (A.N.): Nick, welcome! The Nick Cavoli quintet has been described as having a “unique musical experience” due to your blend of cultural nuances. Can you elaborate on how these different influences shape your contemporary jazz sound?

Nick Cavoli (N.C.): Thank you for having me! Our unique sound is a direct reflection of our diverse backgrounds. Each member brings their own musical heritage to the table, whether it’s from Eastern Europe, the US, or elsewhere. These influences intertwine, creating a rich and complex tapestry that informs our compositions and improvisation. We strive to create contemporary jazz that’s both rooted in tradition and forward-thinking.

The Magic of Live Performance

A.N.: The Quintet is known for creating a “special atmosphere” both on and off stage. How do you foster this connection with your audience during your live performances?

N.C.: For us, a live performance is a conversation, not just a presentation. We connect with the audience through vulnerability and honesty. We are bringing our feelings and musical interpretations, and connecting with the audience as much as possible. The improvisational nature of jazz also allows us to create unique moments tailored to the energy of the room therefore every performance is something special.

From berlin to Café Valhalla

A.N.: You’ve played over 500 concerts across Europe and the US, including renowned new York jazz clubs. What are you looking forward to most about performing at café valhalla?

N.C.: Every venue has its own charm, and we’re thrilled to bring our contemporary jazz to a more intimate setting like Café Valhalla. We enjoy performing in local venues across the world so we’re also excited to be here in Liepaja. We are happy to bring our music to audiences and enjoy the local culture. We are able to bring our songs to life at these venues. We hope that we bring a world class music expereince for many of the local music fans.

The Quintet’s Collaborative Spirit

A.N.: the Archyde news team is excited about this special performance. The Quintet consists of five extraordinary musicians: Artur Rutkevich, Arseny Rykov, Aliaksey Kryshtal, and Kaspars Kurdeko, along with yourself. How does this collaboration enhance your music?

N.C.: I value the input of each individual member. They each have their own personalities and perspectives on jazz, and the collaboration is much more of a creative project with various inputs. These brilliant collaborators are all seasoned jazz professionals so combining their talents is always an experience.

A Question for Our Readers
