Nicaraguan Government’s Attack on Catholic Church: Escalating Tensions and International Controversy

2023-08-27 07:01:49

Managua: The brutal action of the Nicaraguan government against the Catholic Church is again. The government of President Daniel Ortega revoked the legal status of the Society of Jesus and ordered the transfer of all property to the state. A community of Jesus was evacuated from private property near the Central American University in Managua, described as a ‘terrorist center’, and the university confiscated.

The lame accusation of the totalitarian regime is that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has not reported the figures for the financial periods of 2020, 2021 and 2022. The Nicaraguan University Alliance said the move is just another chapter in the ongoing persecution of the Catholic Church and the faith that nourishes the nation.

On August 15, the government seized the University of Central America (UCA), which is run by the Jesuit monastic community, and its properties. Last April, the Vatican closed its embassy in Nicaragua following a government directive. The government was angered by the fact that the church protested against the government’s attempt to suppress the general public who questioned the government’s dictatorship.

The United Nations has recently expressed its displeasure at the ongoing unjust actions against the leaders and institutions of the Catholic Church. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that the escalating tensions between the Nicaraguan government and the Catholic Church for months are deeply troubling.

The arrest and 26-year prison sentence of Nicaraguan Bishop Alvarez has been the subject of international controversy and has met with opposition. The United Nations has also questioned the decision taken by the Nicaraguan government to close down a university under the Jesuit Order, citing the accusation of national security concerns.

American Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel also condemned the President’s authoritarian move. The United States has condemned the government’s continued repression of religious individuals and institutions. Calls for the immediate and unconditional release of those imprisoned in Nicaragua, including Bishop Alvarez. The decision is yet another sign that Ortega and Murillo are continuing their dictatorship and targeting all independent institutions in Nicaragua. He also asked if the US government knew if Bishop Alvarez was still alive or not.

Bishop Silvio Baez wrote on social media that as a former student of the Central American University of Managua, he rejects the dictatorship’s attack on this center of learning. It was on August 9 that the university’s bank accounts were frozen. Following this, the university authorities responded that they are going through adverse conditions and are trying to solve the problems that prevented them from conducting banking activities.
