Tensions between the leftist government of President Daniel Ortega and the Catholic Church have intensified over the past month.
(Sputnik) – Nicaragua has suspended diplomatic relations with the Vatican, the Central American nation’s foreign ministry announced on Sunday, following media reports that it has closed its embassy in Rome.
“In the face of information released by sources apparently linked to the Catholic Church, the Government… claims that relations between the Vatican State and Nicaragua have been suspended,” the ministry said.
Tensions between the leftist government of President Daniel Ortega and the Catholic Church intensified last month following a court in Managua sentenced Bishop Rolando Alvarez of Nicaragua to more than 26 years in prison for attempts to undermine national integrity. Pope Francis called Nicaragua a “dictatorship” in an interview with Infobae on Friday.
