MEXICO CITY (AP) — The government of Nicaragua withdrew the nationality granted to Russian citizen Viktor Pavlovich Trukhin, appointed “honorary consul” in Saint Petersburg two years ago, whom Russian authorities would be investigating for alleged corruption, it was officially reported Monday.

The decision is contained in resolution 126-2023 of the Ministry of the Interior (Interior) of the government of Daniel Ortega, published in the official newspaper La Gaceta, according to which Trukhin has “contravened the provisions of the Political Constitution” by entering and leaving the national territory “making indistinct use of the nationality of origin (Russian) and the acquired nationality” (Nicaraguan).

The official document does not mention the alleged acts of corruption attributed to the Nicaraguan honorary consul, appointed to that position in 2021, when he acquired the nationality of the Central American country.

Trukhin, a 59-year-old doctor by profession, arrived in Nicaragua to direct the Biotechnology Mechnikov vaccine plant, whose construction in Managua was financed mainly by the Russian government.

According to the press in Moscow and Managua, he was arrested on September 8 in Russia, where he is being investigated for alleged embezzlement of funds allocated to the aforementioned vaccine plant in Nicaragua.
