Illegal immigration is a major challenge for the United States, and President Joe Biden has announced stricter measures on the southern border to curb the arrival of asylum seekers. However, these efforts are threatened by countries such as Nicaragua, whose government is led by Daniel Ortega, which facilitates irregular migration to the US.

An investigation by Confidencial revealed that Nicaragua organizes charter flights to transport thousands of migrants from various countries to Managua, charging a fee of $150 per person and allowing them to remain in the country for up to 96 hours without leaving official records.

The Nicaraguan government facilitates the logistics for migrants to head north of the country and continue their journey to the United States. These operations have generated at least $65.9 million for the Ortega regime, also fueling illegal and smuggling activities. This scheme allows migrants without sufficient resources to try to cross the US border without having to apply for visas, as is the case in Panama or Mexico.

Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols condemned the use of migration as a foreign policy tool and criticized Nicaragua for allowing trafficking networks to exploit vulnerable migrants. In response, the United States has imposed sanctions once morest Nicaraguan officials and airlines involved in these practices. Among the sanctioned airlines are Sky High Aviation Services, Sunrise Airways, Air Century, Servicios Aéreos Panamericanos, Servicio Aéreo de Capurgana, and EuroAtlantic Airways.
