Managua: Violence against Christians and churches continues in Central America’s largest country, Nicaragua. Researcher and lawyer Martha Patricia Molina published investigative findings titled ‘Nicaragua: A Persecuted Church’ to cover the horrendous attacks on Christians.

529 attacks have occurred in Nicaragua over five years under dictator Daniel Ortega’s rule. So far this year, there have been 90 attacks on the church. The researcher also exposed the torture, defamation, destruction, robbery, evictions and confiscations suffered by the people of Nicaragua. Molina also condemned the imprisonment of committed religious leaders and lay people of the Church in Nicaragua.

Molina stated that this article will help the people of present and future generations to understand the political, cultural and social history of Nicaragua and to avoid repeating the same mistakes. According to statistics, 84 attacks against the Catholic Church in Nicaragua were reported in 2018, 80 in 2019, 59 in 2020, 55 in 2021 and 161 in 2022.

Various Christian media outlets have faced shutdowns, and 176 Holy Week parades have been banned, among other attacks by the dictatorship.

The purpose of Martha Patricia Molina’s report is to show in concrete figures the attacks the Catholic Church has experienced in Nicaragua. The damage to churches, attacks on priests and nuns, and daily events in their parishes, the work of the laity to support the Church under attack is worth mentioning.
