LONDON – The UK is set to hire retired doctors to cut months-long waiting times for NHS patients. Due to frequent strikes by junior doctors, consultants and nurses, appointments and appointments for patients are being postponed. The ‘back-to-work’ scheme announced by the NHS will allow more patients to make appointments when retired doctors return from February.

The extent to which the NHS has been affected by junior doctors’ strikes over the past two months is yet to emerge. NHS chiefs hope to attract retired doctors by allowing flexible working hours and remote working facilities. NHS England said it would roll out the ‘back-to-work’ scheme to other staff once it proves successful.

Around 1000 consultant doctors retire from the NHS each year. A website has been launched to connect eligible doctors with hospitals. Trusts can upload outpatient appointments, specialist advice requests, education training support and select interested consultants. There are currently 7.6 million patients on NHS waiting lists.
