The Columbus Blue Jackets have announced the firing of head coach Brad Larsen, who had been at the helm of the team for two seasons. The team also announced that goaltending coach Manny Legace’s contract would not be renewed.
Larsen had taken over as head coach ahead of the 2021-22 season, but had been on the team’s coaching staff since 2014-15. He had served as assistant coach to Todd Richards as well as John Tortorella, before taking charge of the team.
Columbus finished the 2022-23 season ranked 31st overall in the NHL this season, with a record of 25-48-9.
“This season has been extremely disappointing for us and we all have some responsibility,” said general manager Jarmo Kekalainen. These decisions were hard to make and they weren’t made without respect for the coaches and the people that Brad and Manny are. Brad has been a part of our organization for over a decade and we are so grateful for his hard work and many contributions both on and off the ice. We wish him the best in the future. »
Larsen’s brief stint as Jackets head coach ended with a record of 62-86-16 in 164 games. The Blue Jackets have missed the playoffs in each of the two seasons.
After the deal given to Johnny Gaudreau last summer, expectations were higher for Columbus. The team was hit with several injuries, however, including an injury to Patrik Laine and a season-ending injury to defender Zach Werenski.
With their 31st place in the standings, the Blue Jackets have a 13.5% chance of winning the lottery ahead of the draft.
Larsen’s contract is due to expire at the end of the 2023-24 campaign. He had agreed to a three-year deal.
