HCD wants to bring back superstar Joe Thornton
NHL star Joe Thornton may see his future in Davos. HCD made various offers to the 43-year-old. “Joe is an important element of HCD,” said Spengler Cup boss Marc Gianola, explaining the idea of the superstar’s return.
Joe Thornton is close to HCD’s heart. As every summer, the NHL legend is training in Davos, the striker is currently still looking for a club for next season. But his more distant future is also a topic. And that might well be in Davos following his playing career: HCD has already made offers to the Canadian, who also has a Swiss passport. The office of Spengler Cup Sports Director is one of them. “That’s just one of many opportunities we offered him,” confirms Marc Gianoa, OC President of the Spengler Cup.
The NHL superstar knows the traditional tournament very well. In the lockout seasons 2004/05 and 2012/13, Thornton delighted in the old year’s week at the Spengler Cup. In the first year of the lockout, he also met his current wife Tabea in Davos. He returns to Graubünden with her and their two children every summer and is a HCD training guest.
Thornton last played 12 games in HCD dress two years ago before returning to the NHL, where he finished the season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Last season, the Sharks legend (2006 to 2020) found refuge with the Florida Panthers. Despite his age, the 43-year-old center is still flirting with the NHL. However, there is regular speculation regarding a (final) season at HCD.
Gianola: “The most important thing for Joe right now is that he wants to keep playing.” He is still in HCD training this week, following which he will have two weeks of vacation. “After that he will eventually make the decision whether to return to North America or not.” According to Gianola, only when this is certain will the possibilities of a function at HCD be discussed more concretely. The one you strive for at the club. Because: “Joe Thornton is an important element for the HCD,” says Gianola.
*In an earlier version, a news item was quoted from Radio SRF 3, which reported Thornton’s commitment as future Spengler Cup sports director as definitive.
