The soon-to-be 37-year-old veteran was scheduled to become a free agent on Wednesday following completing the final year of an eight-year, $55 million contract with the Bruins. He will enter his 19th season with the team.
He also underwent surgery on his left elbow last June and his recovery period might stretch from 10 to 12 weeks.
The Bruins captain won the Frank-J.-Selke Trophy for the fifth time in her career in 2021-2022. He also had 65 points in 73 games.
Second round choice (45th) of the Bruins in 2003, the native of L’Ancienne-Lorette has played his entire career in Boston. In 1,216 games, he scored 400 goals and added 582 assists.
