NHL: Oilers get Mattias Ekholm from Nashville Predators

The Edmonton Oilers landed a defenseman before the trade deadline.

The Canadian squad has acquired Nashville Predators defenseman Mattias Ekholm.

In return, Oilers send defenseman Tyson Barrie, a pick of 1, to Nashvilleis round in 2023, 19-year-old forward Reid Schaefer and a fourth-round pick in 2024.

The 32-year-old Ekholm has played his entire career with the Preds, who drafted him in 2009. This season, the defenseman has scored five goals and has amassed 13 assists in 57 games.

Since making his NHL debut in the 2011-12 campaign, Ekholm has tallied 268 points in 719 games with the Predators.

Barrie has 43 points and 10 goals in 61 games this season. He spent the last three seasons with the Oilers.

Schaefer plays with the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL. He has 47 points in 44 games. He had been selected in the 1is round in 2022.

The Oilers are in the thick of the playoff chase. They are third in the Pacific Division with 72 points in 61 games.

During the day, the Preds also announced that they had acquired forward Austin Rueschhoff from the New York Rangers once morest future considerations.

Rueschhoff had 11 points in 31 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American League.
