The Columbus Blue Jackets suffered an 8-2 defeat away to the Montréal Canadiens. The New Jersey Devils defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-3.
A disastrous middle third with four goals conceded cost Columbus the defeat in Montréal, the first third ended 2:2 Lane Pederson (2nd) and Kirill Marchenko (18th) had scored for Columbus.
Elvis Merzlikins was replaced on his comeback following 40 minutes and 18 saves from 24 shots by Michael Hutchinson.
Tim Berni received 14:50 ice time, blocked three shots and left the ice with a neutral record.
After both teams had scored once in the first third, New Jersey took a 3-1 lead within 69 seconds of the 24th minute thanks to a double strike. After Jesper Bratt made it 2-1, Nico Hischier benefited from a mistake by Ottawa in his own zone and served Dawson Mercer, who scored with his direct shot. Thomas Chabot reduced the lead to 3:2 at halftime and Mark Kastelic equalized to make it 3:3 following 37 minutes. In the 44th minute it was defender Dougie Hamilton who put New Jersey ahead once more. Ottawa was without a goalkeeper with 62 seconds left, but New Jersey was able to break free and Nico Hischier served Tomas Tatar, who scored the 5:3 into the empty goal. This definitely puts New Jersey in the playoffs.
Nico Hischier won 8 of 16 face-offs, received 17:45 ice time, had four shots on target, blocked two shots and ended the game with a neutral record.
Timo Meier received 16:24 ice time, shot five times on goal, distributed two checks and ended the game with a minus – 1 – record.
Jonas Siegenthaler was in action 16:22, shot twice on goal, distributed two checks, blocked three shots and went off the ice with a minus – 2 – record.
