LONG ISLAND, NY – John Tavares took advantage of a duel once morest his former team to reach the 1,000-point mark, but it was not enough for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who lost 4-3 in overtime at the hands of the New York Islanders on Monday.
Tavares had a goal and an assist to become the 98th player to reach the prestigious plateau in his 1,054th game.
Scorer of his eighth goal of the season midway through the second, Tavares reached the 1,000th point on Morgan Rielly’s tying goal, which sent the game into overtime by hitting the target with seven seconds on the clock following William Nylander’s shot hit Tavares in front of the Islanders net before appearing on the blade of the Leafs defenseman’s stick.
Tavares’ feat was met with boos from the fans gathered on Long Island, who likely still haven’t come to terms with the center’s decision to join the Leafs more than five years ago.
“It wasn’t the prettiest game,” Tavares admitted. But it gives us a big point in the rankings. I’m glad it came at an important time for the team. Obviously, I would have preferred to celebrate my 1000th point in a victory, but I am very proud of it.
“In a way, I’m glad it’s done and I can move on. »
It was the Leafs’ father-son trip and Tavares had the privilege of achieving this feat before his father’s eyes.
“It was very special to reach this plateau in the place where I spent the first nine seasons of my career with my father in the stands,” Tavares said.
Tavares’ feat was met with boos from the fans gathered on Long Island, who likely still haven’t come to terms with the center’s decision to join the Leafs more than five years ago.
Islanders fans only needed to wait 46 seconds in overtime to smile once more as Bo Horvat gave the New Yorkers the victory with his 10th goal of the season on assists from Mathew Barzal and Noah Dobson.
Dobson finished the game with three assists, Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri added a goal and an assist each and Ilya Sorokin stopped 36 shots to help the Islanders sign a third straight victory.
Auston Matthews opened the scoring with his 19th goal of the season for the Maple Leafs. He finds himself tied with Nikita Kucherov at the top of the NHL scorers. It was the first time this season that he scored the first goal in a match.
Nelson tied the game midway through the first and Casey Cizikas then gave the Islanders their first lead by hitting the target with a backhand with 1:27 on the clock in the first.
Palmieri followed up with the Islanders’ third unanswered goal to make it 3-1 1:10 into the second.
After Tavares’ goal, both attacks were silent until the last minute of the match. Sorokin made more stops at the end of the game while the Leafs had removed their goaltender in order to attack with six skaters.
He temporarily deprived Tavares of his 1000th with a superb save in front of Calle Jarnkrok following a nice pass from the Leafs captain.
Sorokin came back with back-to-back saves in front of Jarnkrok and Tavares in the final minute, but was then powerless on the broken play that led to Rielly’s equalizing goal.
Ilya Samsonov made 26 saves in front of the Maple Leafs, who had won their last two games.
Heiskanen finds his touch once morest the Red Wings
Miro Heiskanen ended a 23-game drought without finding the back of the net with a two-goal, one-assist performance to lead the Dallas Stars to a 6-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.
Heiskanen, author of just one goal in his first 26 games of the season, tied the game 1-1 in the first and completed the scoring into an empty net late in the game. He also set up Joe Pavelski’s insurance goal, which made it 5-3 with 6:09 left in the third. Heiskanen hadn’t scored since the third game of the season.
Esa Lindell and Jason Robertson both had a goal and an assist while Roope Hintz and Sam Steel provided two assists each. Jake Oettinger made 27 saves in net for the Stars, who have won two of their last three games.
Matt Duchene was the other scorer for the Stars. He made it 4-1 in the second with Dallas’ fourth unanswered goal.
Accomplice of Heiskanen’s first goal, Stars captain Jamie Benn reached the plateau of 500 assists.
Daniel Sprong, Jonatan Berggren and Joe Veleno scored and Shayne Gostisbehere had two assists for the Red Wings, who have not tasted victory in their last three games (0-2-1).
James Reimer made 29 saves for Detroit.
The Red Wings were without captain Dylan Larkin, out indefinitely following suffering a worrying injury in Saturday’s game once morest the Ottawa Senators.
David Perron was serving the first match of his six-game suspension for having delivered a double check to the head of Artem Zub following Larkin’s injury.
A 3rd loss in a row for Arizona
Kyle Okposo and Eric Robinson each had three points and the Buffalo Sabers defeated the Arizona Coyotes 5-2.
The Sabres’ fourth line (12-14-3) scored each of their club’s first three goals, the other going to center Peyton Krebs.
Buffalo therefore bounced back following its 3-2 shootout loss once morest the Canadiens.
JJ Peterka and Rasmus Dahlin – the latter in an empty net to seal the outcome – also scored in the victory.
The Coyotes (13-12-2) have lost their last three games in regulation.
Michael Kesselring and Michael Carcone beat Devon Levi, who scored his fifth victory of the campaign.
The Montreal goalkeeper faced 23 shots, compared to 37 for his opposite number Karel Vejmelka.
