Martin Necas had four points, Brent Burns provided three, and the Carolina Hurricanes crushed the Columbus Blue Jackets 8-1 in a preseason NHL game on Monday night.
Freshly arrived with the Canes, Burns has already scored three goals in this preparatory camp. The 37-year-old veteran joined the San Jose Sharks on July 13.
Former Montreal Canadiens center Jesperi Kotkaniemi also stood out in this game, thanks to a performance of a goal and an assist.
“KK” completed a play by Burns and Seth Jarvis on the power play to score the Canes’ first goal at 7:15 of the first period.
He and Necas then combined their efforts to allow defender Brady Skjei to score his first goal of the pre-season calendar.
For his part, Derek Stepan scored a double for Rod Brind’Amour’s team.
In the loss, second-year forward Yegor Chinakhov added a fourth to his record, having scored seven in 62 games last year.
Lehkonen takes care of the Stars
Artturi Lehkonen stood out in a 3-1 Colorado Avalanche victory over the Dallas Stars.
The former Montreal Canadiens forward flashed the red light on two third-person occasions to put his team on the clock.
Lehkonen scored on the power play 54 seconds into the final period. He doubled his side’s lead just under 12 minutes later.
Evan Rodrigues was the other scorer for the Avalanche in this game. Nils Lundqvist was the only one to beat Pavel Francouz who ended his night with a total of 38 saves.
Holloway sees triple for Oilers
Edmonton Oilers rookie forward Dyllan Holloway boosted his bid for a starting roster spot with a hat trick once morest the Vancouver Canucks.
The Oilers won 6-2.
They were Holloway’s 2nd, 3rd and 4th goals in the past week, a teammate of Cole Caufield at the University of Wisconsin in the NCAA.
The Canadian forward was drafted 14th overall in the 2020 draft.
Tatar succeeds his 3rd of the camp
In another game, the New Jersey Devils bet on Tomas Tatar and Vitek Vanecek to race to a 1-0 win over the Boston Bruins.
The striker scored the only goal of the game halfway through the first period. For his part, Vanecek was perfect in front of the 24 pucks recorded on his cage to win the shutout.
Petry signs up for the score sheet
In Detroit, Jeff Petry got his first assist in a 3-2 Pittsburgh Penguins win over the Red Wings.
Petry played 21:50, while Ryan Poehling, the other player involved in the trade bringing Mike Matheson to Montreal this summer, got 17:23 of playing time.
Bryan Rust, Josh Archibald and Jason Zucker scored for Pittsburgh. Sidney Crosby and Kristoper Letang assisted in Rust’s goal on the massive attack in the first period.
In Seattle, three goals scored by Calgary Flames defensemen paved the way for a 4-1 win over the Kraken.
Chris Tanev, Michael Stone and Noah Hanifin all scored for the Alberta squad.
For the Kraken, rookie center Matty Beniers scored his third goal of the preseason schedule, he who had scored nine points (3-6) during a short audition at the end of the 2021-2022 season.
