NGOs and lawyers: the reasons for giving V.Šiliauskas a lighter sentence are not convincing

V. Šiliauskas was convicted on Monday for having directly demanded and accepted bribes from Autokaustas manager Juozos Kriaučiūnas in the year 2021-2022, the total amount of which is 260 thousand. euros. The court awarded him 70 thousand. EUR fine, and also decided to confiscate the bribe amount.

According to Gintautas Sakalauskas, docent of the Department of Criminal Justice, Faculty of Law, Vilnius University, V. Šiliauskas took a large amount of 260,000 EUR bribery is a serious crime that should carry a real prison sentence of five years on average.

“This is a serious crime, punishable by two to eight years, and as a general rule, the sentence is calculated from the average. (…) Five years is the average sentence that should be applied. This is a serious crime, the execution of his sentence cannot be postponed”, G. Sakalauskas told BNS.

According to him, the court faced a dilemma – whether to imprison the accused or to impose another punishment, which could theoretically be a restriction of freedom, public service, but the court chose to impose a lower than average fine.
