NFL | Offseason saga ended: Aiyuk extends with the 49ers – kicker

The biggest storyline of the offseason has come to an end. The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk have agreed to a contract extension after tough negotiations.

This is what various NFL insiders are reporting. According to them, the San Francisco 49ers and star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk have agreed to a four-year, $120 million contract extension, of which $76 million is guaranteed for the 26-year-old. Because Aiyuk is playing under the so-called fifth-year option next season due to his status as a first-round pick, he is tied to the Santa Clara, California-based franchise for the next five years.

Aiyuk joins the top receiver contracts

The new contract, which is almost identical in terms of numbers to that of Amon-Ra St. Brown (four years, $120 million, $77 guaranteed), puts Aiyuk, as expected, in the top group of wide receivers. Only Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb and AJ Brown get more money in terms of annual salary.

The issue of Aiyuk and a possible contract extension had accompanied the 49ers for almost the entire offseason. It even went so far that the 2020 first-round pick officially requested a trade in mid-July. However, this did not happen because a potentially interested team either could not reach an agreement with the 49ers or because Aiyuk was not satisfied, for example he apparently turned down a contract offer from the New England Patriots.

Aiyuk is not the only one on his team who has sat out due to his contract. Left tackle Trent Williams is still in a hold-out and is not training – the outcome is uncertain.

From Aiyuk’s and the 49ers’ point of view, the agreement has come at just the right time. Aiyuk, who has been present at training but not participated due to weeks of negotiations, now has a good ten days to put the finishing touches on things before the upcoming start of the season (San Francisco opens with a Monday night game against the New York Jets). “At some point you have to play,” 49ers GM John Lynch recently said.

The receiver from Arizona State University was the most productive pass receiver in what is probably the best skill position group of running back Christian McCaffrey, wide receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle both last season (1342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns) and the season before (1015/8). Last season he was rewarded with a Second Team All-Pro award. The only thing that eluded him and his team was the big win, with a Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. But they can now make a fresh start in the new year.
