NFL MVP Race Update: Baltimore Ravens Dominate San Francisco 49ers

2023-12-26 04:33:00

What was expected to be a high-quality game between three of the favorites for the NFL MVP award quickly turned into a nightmare for one of them.

Quarterback Brock Purdy had a night to forget with four interceptions and the San Francisco 49ers suffered a 33-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night.

Purdy had one of his worst performances of the season with only 18 completions for 255 yards and no touchdown passes.

Purdy was replaced by Sam Darnold late in the fourth quarter due to a nerve injury. Darnold connected with Ronnie Bell for a touchdown in the losing cause.

The 49ers’ other touchdown came from another Niners star player who is in the MVP race, Christian McCaffrey. CMC totaled 102 yards on the ground.

The story was quite different for the Ravens, who took advantage of the excellent performance of their quarterback Lamar Jackson to take off. Unlike Purdy, Jackson was flawless with 23 completed passes, 252 yards of aerial gains as well as two touchdown passes.

Zay Flowers was his favorite receiver with nine receptions and a touchdown. Nelson Agholor also reached the end zone on a pass from Jackson in the game. Gus Edwards added a rushing touchdown.

This 49ers loss also means the team sees the Philadelphia Eagles joining them atop the NFC with an 11-4 record. Heading into Monday’s games, San Francisco had a better record than the Eagles.

In contrast, the Ravens remain kings of the AFC with their 12-3 record. They are also at the top of the NFL since they are the only ones to have suffered only three losses this season.

The Ravens will end their season with clashes once morest the Miami Dolphins and the Pittsburgh Steelers, while the 49ers will face the Washington Commanders and the Los Angeles Rams.

Domination de Baltimore

Kyle Hamilton and the defense set the tone early by intercepting Purdy on three of the 49ers’ (11-4) first four offensive series before Jackson took control of the game.

The Ravens quarterback raced 30 yards to set up a field goal on the last play of the first half that gave the Ravens a 16-12 lead. He then helped put the duel out of reach early in the third quarter.

After the Ravens forced a punt on the first offensive series of the second half, Jackson finished an offensive drive by throwing a six-yard pass to Nelson Agholor for a touchdown.

Purdy was intercepted by Patrick Queen on the next play. Jackson immediately turned that interception into another touchdown, this time with a nine-yard pass to Zay Flowers that made the score 30-12.
