NFL games on a racetrack?

What initially sounds like a joke might soon become reality.

If the Jacksonville Jaguars have to temporarily leave their usual home ground in three years due to lengthy renovation work at TIAA Bank Field, they might find a replacement home at Daytona International Speedway.

Jaguars have to give way in 2026 and 2027

A month ago, the franchise itself brought up the idea of switching to the legendary motorsport racetrack for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, where the Daytona 500, the most important race in the annual Nascar series, takes place.

Mark Lamping, Jaguars team president, described the move to Daytona Beach as an “interesting solution”.

Now Speedway boss Frank Kelleher is raising hopes for a spectacular move by the NFL stars to the motorsport Mecca.

Route boss and Jaguars leadership explore options

“Personally, my team and I spent some time in Jacksonville meeting with the leadership there,” Kelleher told News4Jax. “We then had a series of phone calls with architects, engineers and design firms.”

It was regarding how the race track might be converted into an NFL stadium.

The use for American football does not seem to be completely unrealistic. The speedway has hosted football games in the past, including a high school game in 1959 and a college game in 1974.

In addition to the motorsport race track, which is almost 150 kilometers from Jacksonville, there are also locations in Orlando and Gainesville to choose from.

The modernization of the TIAA Bank Field might take up to two and a half years.
