The city of the reigning Super Bowl winner is hosting the 88th NFL Draft in history this week. The 32 teams get to choose the sport’s brightest young talents for three consecutive days. The special thing: To keep the NFL exciting, the worst teams of the past season are allowed to draft first.

In the US, the draft starts on Thursday evening. We start the first round of drafting on Friday, around 2 a.m.

This is how the draft works

  • Since 1994, the NFL Draft has consisted of seven rounds
  • One by one, the NFL teams select their new talents
  • As soon as the first round of the draft has started, the so-called “Draft Clock
  • In the first round, each team has ten minutes Time to pick a player
  • In the second round, the teams only have seven minutes Time.
  • In all other draft rounds (3-7), teams must be within five minutes make their choice.
  • The last pick of the draft (last player of the seventh round) is also called Mr. Irrelevant

NFL Draft 2023: The schedule

Overall, the 2023 draft consists of 259 draft picks. The picks are divided into seven rounds and these rounds are in turn divided into three “Draft Take” distributed:

draftrunde Tag time
1 Friday (April 28) 2 O ‘clock
2 bis 3 Saturday (April 29) 1 O ‘clock
4 bis 7 Saturday (April 29) 6 p.m

In the first round on Friday, the absolute top talents will be drafted. The most talented and successful players of the past college years then find their home in the NFL. This year, however, there is something special:

The first round of the draft only has 31 picks! The NFL took away their first-round draft pick from the Miami Dolphins. The team have been accused of negotiating with Tom Brady and ex-Saints head coach Sean Payton when they were still under contract with other teams. The league is now punishing this so-called “tampering” in this draft.

Saturday is Day 2 and 3 of the draft. In the later rounds, teams look for the famous needle in a haystack. The prime example of this is the Seattle Seahawks. Last year, the team drafted cornerback Tariq Woolen in Round 5. Raw NFL talent took a hit last season. Woolen has long been considered a potential Defensive Rookie of the Year contender.

The teams draft in this order

The worst team following last season was the Chicago Bears. Still, the Bears won’t pick first because the team decided to trade the first draft pick. Instead of Chicago, the Carolina Panthers can now draft their favorite player. With the pick, the Panthers want to find the quarterback solution for the next few years. Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State playmaker CJ Stroud and Florida’s Anthony Richardson are hotly debated possible players Carolina might draft.

First round draft order:

Hot trades and wild rumours

A first round trade rarely comes alone. Even before the draft, there is wild speculation. The Arizona Cardinals might give up the third pick of the first round and collect a lot of draft capital in return. Many teams looking for a young quarterback might find their dream player in this draft class.

Die Top-Stars im Draft

The 2023 draft class has several interesting quarterbacks and some real killer talent. With Bryce Young (Alabama), CJ Stroud (Ohio State), Anthony Richardson (Florida), Will Levis (Kentucky) and Hendon Hooker (Tennessee), five quarterbacks are traded as possible first-round picks.

Another name to remember is Bijan Robinson (Running Back/Texas). Since the New York Giants picked Saquon Barkley with the second draft pick in 2018, there hasn’t been a bigger running back talent than Bijan Robinson. Will the future NFL player be able to continue his incredible college days?

With Jalen Carter (defensive tackle/Georgia), Will Anderson Jr. (Edge/Alabama), Tyree Wilson (Edge/Texas A&M), Devon Witherspoon (cornerback/Illinois) and Christian Gonzalez (cornerback/Oregon), the NFL teams have several exciting defensive players to choose from. In several positions, such as tight end, edge rusher or cornerback, the draft class has a lot of depth and an incredible amount of potential to offer.

Two Germans with draft hopes

Germany is represented in the NFL Draft 2023! With Kilian Zierer (Offensive Line/Auburn) and Lorenz Metz (Offensive Line/Cincinnati), two Germans might be drafted this year. Zierer played left tackle for the Auburn Tigers last collegiate season. With his long arms and his outstanding athleticism, he shows a lot of potential for development. In order to survive in the NFL, however, the 23-year-old will have to work on his technique.

2.06 meters tall and weighs 150 kilograms. Lorenz Metz (Offensive Line/Cincinnati) is a real mountain of a man. The huge offensive guard comes into the draft with an exciting mix of size and power. For many NFL teams, his lack of mobility and the fact that Metz is 25 years old will be a problem. He can still hope for a day 3 pick.
