Students participating in the program in the 2023 season include:
During their month-long internship, students will observe and participate in the mentoring of NFL players. They work directly with and are supervised by the orthopedic team doctors, the primary care team doctors and the sports trainers in order to gain medical knowledge and experience in patient care in sports medicine. In addition, students will be introduced to the guidelines for restarting play and considerations for treating NFL players on the field. At the end of the rotation, students will understand the fundamental elements of all facets of NFL player care from orthopedic, primary care sports medicine and athletic training perspectives.

As the program continues to grow, the league plans to continue expanding the pipeline initiative in the coming years to include additional disciplines and fill additional roles on the team behind the NFL’s “team,” including physician assistants, certified athletic trainers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, and Behavioral Medicine Clinician.
The Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline initiative is part of the league’s broader commitment to ensuring that staff and leaders in the league office and NFL clubs reflect the racial and gender makeup of America. In NFL club medical departments, the initiative builds on existing efforts to recruit and hire diverse medical personnel as positions in all areas become available and to increase diversity on NFL medical committees.
