Brazilian playmaker Neymar underwent “successful” surgery for a ruptured cruciate ligament and a meniscus in his left knee on Thursday in Belo Horizonte, the hospital announced.

“The operation was a success. We are very satisfied with the result,” Rodrigo Lasmar, the surgeon who carried out the operation, told the press.

“He underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and both meniscus injuries were repaired,” added the surgeon.

Neymar, 31, will remain hospitalized “for 24 to 48 hours depending on the clinical evolution”, the doctor said.

Thursday morning Neymar posted a photo on Instagram of himself surrounded by his two sons and accompanied by the message: “Everything will be fine.”

After the procedure, still on the social network, “Ney” posted another photo showing him lying on his hospital bed with a half-smile and a thumbs-up: “Everything went well. Thanks for the messages and now it’s time to recover,” he wrote in the caption.

The unavailability of the striker recently recruited by the Saudi club Al-Hilal was not specified, but long months of rehabilitation are generally necessary to play once more following such an injury.

Dr. Lasmar, doctor for the Brazilian selection, had already operated on Neymar for a broken foot in March 2018 when he played for Paris SG.

The Seleçao star was injured on October 17 during the defeat (2-0) once morest Uruguay in Montevideo in a qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup. He was evacuated on a stretcher, in tears.

The Brazilian joined Al-Hilal in August, following six seasons at PSG, a stint punctuated by numerous physical glitches.

This year, a serious injury to his right ankle kept him away from the field for six months, from March to September.

During the 2022 World Cup, in Qatar, he was injured during the first match, once morest Serbia. He returned for the round of 16, but was unable to prevent the elimination of the Seleçao in the quarterfinals once morest Croatia on penalties, even if he scored during extra time.

On September 8, “Ney” broke Pelé’s record for goals in the selection, scoring two once morest Bolivia (5-1) to total 79, two more than the “King”.

The Seleçao will have to do without him at least during their next qualifying matches for the World Cup, which continue once morest Colombia on November 16 and with a shock once morest the Argentinian world champions on the 21st at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
