NexusMods’ Policy on Inclusivity Sparks Controversy: The Battle Over Modifying Characters

2023-12-06 09:20:00

The largest modification site, NexusMods, continues to have a policy of removing and banning any work that in any way undermines inclusivity in games. This time, the modification that turns Maiden Eileen into Ser Eileen came under attack. Despite the fact that such a character’s trans transition should have pleased the LGBT community, in fact it was not happy, because as a result, the Eileen-Isobel couple was no longer lesbian. First, a post with angry comments was published on Reddit, where it collected over 17 thousand votes and almost 3 thousand comments in 2 days, and then the NexusMods website deleted the modification and banned its author. Here is the official comment from the site: Yedlike was banned from Nexus Mods for violating our community rules. This is an account created to upload a mod that attempts to bypass our community guidelines. The mod in question reduces inclusivity and diversity in Baldur’s Gate 3 by taking a same-sex couple and changing the gender of one of the partners to make them heterosexual. We are for inclusivity, we are for diversity. If we believe that someone is uploading a mod to our site with the intention of deliberately being anti-inclusivity and/or diversity, we will take action once morest them. The same goes for people who try to troll other mod users to cause a stir. We are not an authority on what users can and cannot do. Removing a mod means it can’t be found on Nexus Mods, nothing more and nothing less. As a private business, we have the right to choose what content we post on our platform and what we don’t. Respect this right just as you want your rights to be respected. Does it seem strange to you that a mod that turns a same-sex couple into an opposite-sex couple has somehow reduced diversity in the game? Curious choice of words.
