From next year, producers and importers of plastic products will also receive a discount on the amount they pay for collecting and recycling non-fully sustainable plastic. Many producers are not yet able to meet all the requirements and that is why they will receive some discounts from January if plastic packaging is slightly more sustainable.
The Packaging Waste Fund Foundation is responsible for the collection and recycling of packaging on behalf of the business community. Companies now receive a 26 cent discount per kilo of plastic if the packaging meets all sustainability requirements, for example if it consists entirely of recycled plastic.
From 2024, companies will receive a discount of 10 to 50 cents, depending on the requirements the products meet. With the discounts, the Waste Fund wants to reward companies for packaging that is not yet completely sustainable, but also encourage companies to make packaging more environmentally friendly.
The government aims for a fully circular economy by 2050. The Netherlands must therefore use far fewer raw materials and use materials more economically. General Manager Hester Klein Lankhorst of the Waste Fund says that the discounts are an important step towards a circular economy.
The Packaging Waste Fund Foundation was recently reprimanded because the collection target for plastic beverage bottles was not achieved. Last year, 68 percent of all plastic bottles were collected, which is much less than the legally required 90 percent.
The Waste Fund will soon come up with an action plan, a spokesperson said.
