At the world’s best international hacking competition ‘2023 DEFCON CTF 31’, the ‘MMM Team’ consisting of BoB mentors and graduates took first place for two consecutive years

The Ministry of Science and ICT (hereinfollowing referred to as the Ministry of Science and ICT) and the Korea Information Technology Research Institute (hereinfollowing referred to as KITRI), the Maple Mallard Magistrates (MMM) team composed of mentors and graduates of the ‘Next Generation Security Leader Training Program (hereinfollowing referred to as BoB)’, hacking contest (DEFCON CTF)’.

The DEF CON International Hacking Contest is the world’s best hacking contest held during the DEF CON event, an American cybersecurity conference. As hackers and security experts from all over the world compete, the winning team of the Defcon International Hacking Contest will gain status as the world’s best hacker.

In the BoB education project supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and operated by KITRI, three teams, ‘Maple Mallard Magistrates (MMM)’, ‘SuperDiceCode’, and ‘HypeBoy’, which were composed of education mentors and graduates, competed in the finals. Among them, the MMM team proved its mighty skills once once more by taking first place in this competition following last year’s first place.

The MMM team is an allied team composed of 15 members of Theori, Korea’s top offensive security company, composed of BoB mentors and graduates, 15 members of PPP, a hacking club from Carnegie Mellon University in the US, and 15 members of Maple Bacon, a cybersecurity club from the University of British Columbia, Canada.

The Ministry of Science and ICT is actively implementing the ‘plan to nurture 100,000 cyber talents’ announced last year. Specifically, while strengthening specialized courses such as the next-generation security leader training program (BoB), White Hat School (pre-BoB) newly established in 2023, S-Developer (security developer course), and Security Academy (company-specific training), , information security specialization college, convergence security graduate school, etc., etc. are being expanded* to focus on cultivating top-notch cyber manpower.

Among them, the next-generation security leader training program (BoB) is a top-notch white hacker training program. It is a nine-month training program consisting of customized training by mentors composed of top experts in information security and team projects for trainees. The BoB curriculum started in 2012, and so far, regarding 1,600 white hackers have been produced.

Hong Jin-bae, head of Network Policy Office at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “In order for Korea to become a true IT powerhouse and build an IT infrastructure that is safe from external cyber threats, leader-level security talents who can lead numerous engineers are essential, and the quality of information security talents is essential. The government will also actively support it for improvement,” he said.
