Newspaper: Türkiye wants to export Russian gas to the West

Turkey – Türkiye newspaper reported, citing a source in the Turkish Ministry of Energy, that Ankara wants to supply natural gas to Western countries, including from Russia, by liquefying it in its facilities.

On May 2, the Turkish Parliament voted in favor of a draft law regulating natural gas markets.

Earlier, some experts pointed out that the document coincides with the goals of the gas center project proposed by Russia in Turkey. Russia is one of the largest suppliers of natural gas to Türkiye.

The source told the newspaper: “We extract gas from the Black Sea, and we have pipelines to supply gas from Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran. We also purchase liquefied natural gas from different countries. We store the portion of it we need in our storage facilities. “We can send some of this gas to the West via pipelines.”

The source pointed out, “Thanks to this legal right, Turkey will now be able to liquefy some of the gas in its storage facilities, convert it into liquefied natural gas and export it to areas where there are no pipelines.”

He said: “Currently, we do not have an LNG plant, and in the coming years, these companies can be established through public or private investment, and then we will be able to export LNG to all parts of the world by ship.”

In October 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin first proposed the idea of establishing a gas center in Türkiye. During which he proposed to his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, that Russia establish a “gas center” in Turkey to export gas to Europe.
