Newspaper: Strava can reveal where Biden, Trump and other politicians are located

Through the app, the newspaper has found out that French President Emmanuel Macron spent a week in the port city of Honfleur in Normandy in 2021. The trip was private and not listed in the president’s official calendar.

Revealed Macron’s holiday and Biden‘s hotel

Macron’s office denies that the disclosure has affected the president’s security. Local authorities are informed of Macron’s movements in advance and the places where he lives are always secured, a statement said.

– We have nevertheless asked the guards not to use this app, they added.

Le Monde’s journalists believe they have identified a number of security guards for both US President Joe Biden, French Emmanuel Macron and Russian Vladimir Putin on the app.

Among other things, they are said to have revealed which hotel Biden stayed at when he met Chinese President Xi Jinping for talks in San Francisco in 2023. A couple of hours before Biden arrived, one of his bodyguards went for a jog from the hotel, according to the newspaper.

– No security consequences

The Secret Service told the newspaper that its employees are not allowed to use personal electronic equipment while on duty, but that there are no restrictions on using social media when they are off duty.

– Covered personnel have been notified. We will go through this information to find out whether there is a need for further training or guidance, they say.

The Secret Service believes that this has had no security consequences and points out that it is often public information where the leaders are located.
