Newspaper: NATO to deploy 5,000-strong brigade in Finland near Russian border

The newspaper indicated that it is expected that in the coming weeks, an official announcement will be made about the deployment of this military force in the Finnish city of Mikkeli, near the Russian border.

According to the article, the unit being created is also known as FLF (Forward Land Forces).

On August 21, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkinen said that his country was negotiating with a number of NATO countries to deploy troops on their territory. Hakkinen told reporters that NATO units could be deployed in the country for a long time, but not on a permanent basis. He noted that this was a matter of tense situations, not of a real military threat. The minister did not provide any details about the countries with which Finland was negotiating, but noted that other countries besides northern Europe were also involved in these talks.

Last June, First Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council Rashid Nurgaliyev said that Finland could soon become a platform for deploying additional NATO troops and offensive weapons.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted that Russia has seen a significant increase in Finland’s military activity since it joined NATO.

Finland is known to have applied to join NATO after the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine in 2022, and gained membership in the alliance in 2023.
