Edmundo González’s lawyer, José Vicente Haro, ruled out on Tuesday, September 3, that the opposition leader plans to request political asylum for the arrest warrant issued by a court against him.

“That scenario is not planned or contemplated, a very brave decision. His greatest desire is to be close to the Venezuelans and to reciprocate the support they have given him,” he said during an interview for W Radio.

The lawyer also explained that the case should not have been brought to court because González “has nothing to do” with the facts of which he is accused.

On Tuesday, September 3, the NGO SOS Orinoco called for the renewal of the UN mandate over Venezuela, which expires in September 2024.

“We must renew our mission to protect victims of environmental abuse in southern Venezuela,” reads the message posted by SOS Orinoco on X (formerly Twitter).

This is the second NGO to make this request through social media after Provea made a call on Monday, September 2.

The organization said the mission’s work was “crucial” due to the reports of human rights violations and violations of indigenous peoples in the Mining Arc. “The report itself said that there was still a lot of work to be done. SOS Orinoco demonstrated that Nicolás Maduro’s criminal mining policy continues to expand and strengthen,” the statement reads.

The OVCS warned on Tuesday, September 3, that a possible arrest of Edmundo González could provoke citizen protests in Venezuela. The NGO’s statement came one day after an arrest warrant was issued against the opposition leader.
