At least two people died on Tuesday, July 2, after the Manzanares River in Sucre state overflowed due to the rains caused by Hurricane Beryl.

Remigio Ceballos, vice president of the Citizen Security sector, said that they are continuing to search for five people who disappeared after the river rose.

Ceballos indicated through his X account (formerly Twitter) that the rainfall flooded several roads and affected dozens of homes in the sectors of La Fragua, the Blanco neighborhood, José Antonio de Sucre Avenue, Las Tinajitas, Trinchera, Los Cedros and Palenque.

Venezuela’s National Institute of Civil Aeronautics (INAC) reported on Tuesday, July 2, that it had lifted the suspension of flights to Porlamar (Nueva Esparta), Cumaná and Carúpano (Sucre) that it had established due to Hurricane Beryl causing strong winds and storm surges. The suspension is only temporarily maintained for flights to Los Roques due to remaining cloud cover and wind gusts.

The INAC said that the measures are preventive and temporary to ensure the safety of travelers while the weather phenomenon passes. However, it did not indicate taking new actions due to the weather conditions.

The northern and eastern coastal areas of Venezuela were affected by the passage of Hurricane Beryl. So far, two people have died in Sucre due to the overflow of the Manzanares River caused by constant rains.

On Tuesday, July 2, the School of Psychology of the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB) presented the results of PsicoData 2024, a report that offers details on the psychosocial situation of Venezuelans.

The study highlighted that in Venezuela mental health is still a taboo due to social stigma, which causes psychological processes to be managed privately and not jointly.

Danny Socorro, director of the UCAB School of Psychology, said that 2,000 respondents participated in the survey, 500 more than those conducted in 2023.

Relatives of several prisoners protested on Tuesday, July 2, in front of the headquarters of the Ombudsman’s Office in Caracas, to demand that due process be respected.

The protesters warned of an alleged “chronic abuse” of the Anti-Terrorism Law. They also demanded an end to persecution under this law, according to posts by the non-governmental organization (NGO) Provea on its social media.

At least 50 people were killed and several injured Tuesday, July 2, in a stampede at a religious festival in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, local police reported.

The district administration is investigating the matter. The injured are being taken to hospital and people are still recovering. Doctors have reported a death toll of 50 to 60,” Hathras district magistrate Ashish Kumar told reporters.

The stampede occurred during a prayer ceremony in the district, a private event that had received permission from the authorities, according to the official, who added that the administration itself was in charge of security but that the rest of the preparations were not up to them.

The Venezuelan Olympic Committee (COV) announced on July 2 that athletes Yulimar Rojas and Julio Mayora are Venezuela’s flag bearers for the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (OG).

Rojas, a triple jump athlete, will once again be Venezuela’s flag bearer after having represented the country at the Tokyo 2020 games, where she was accompanied by karateka Antonio Diaz; while weightlifter Julio Mayora won the silver medal in weightlifting at the competition in the capital of Japan and took home the gold medal at the last two Pan American Games.
