The mayor of the Maracaibo municipality (Zulia), the opposition member Rafael Ramírez Colina—arrested on October 2—was deprived of liberty as reported this Saturday, October 5, by his wife Vanessa Linares de Ramírez.

(…) Rafael was deprived of his defenders, which is contrary to due process and the legitimate right to defense established in our Constitution and laws and that he deserves as a human being, demonstrating once again that it is an act of political persecution,” he wrote on his X account.

De Ramírez explained that a hearing was held at the headquarters of the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (Sebin) in Maracaibo where “illegally” they decreed the deprivation of liberty of her husband and other detainees.

The NGO Human Rights Observatory of the University of Los Andes (ULA) stated this Saturday, October 5, that “more than half” of teachers in Venezuela are “below the poverty line.”

In addition, they recognized the “fight” led by this union to demand fair salaries and decent working conditions, such as social security and adequate conditions in educational infrastructure.

The ULA Observatory took the opportunity to urge the authorities to respond to the demands of the sector and guarantee the right to education in Venezuela.

Through a press release, the NGO indicated that they recorded seven acts of censorship, six of verbal harassment, six administrative restrictions, four of intimidation, two judicial harassment and one threat.

Likewise, Espacio Público detailed that they documented 16 perpetrators, of which 8 were State institutions, two public officials, two private operators, a security force and a member of the Executive Branch, which was not specified.

5. First Justice rejected the arrest of several opponents in the state of Zulia

The Primero Justicia political party rejected, through its social networks, “the persecution and repression” against opposition leaders. In particular, he condemned the arrest of the mayor of Maracaibo, Zulia state, Rafael Ramírez Colina, and Pedro Guanipa, director of the Mayor’s Office of this city.

Ramírez Colina and Guanipa are two of the 154 opposition politicians who, according to the Vente Venezuela party, were detained in the country during the weeks before and after the presidential elections.

6. Venezuela sent 54 firefighters to Bolivia to mitigate forest fires

7. More than 20 police officers were injured during a pro-Palestinian protest in Italy

At least 24 police officers and 3 protesters were injured at a pro-Palestine demonstration in Rome, Italy. While 5 people were arrested for the disturbances caused.

The rally in Rome’s Ostiense Square in favor of Palestine led to strong clashes between some of the protesters and the Police, who responded with batons and firing gas to prevent them from exceeding the permitted area.

The protest brought together about 7,000 people inside the Plaza Ostiense, since the authorities had prohibited them from marching through the streets of the capital days before. For this reason, they had secured the area with hundreds of police and riot police officers.
