On Saturday, July 20, the Venezuelan Electoral Observatory (OEV) urged people to condemn speeches that incite violence during the electoral campaign. Likewise, representatives of the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA) announced that they will travel to Venezuela for the election day.

The OEV called on Saturday, July 20, to condemn any speech that “incites division or violence” during the electoral campaign for the presidential elections on July 28, which ends on July 25, and urged the use of constructive language oriented “towards the common good.”

In a statement, the NGO said that “political actors, especially representatives of the Venezuelan State, must promote public discourse and a political and social climate favorable to the development of a peaceful and participatory electoral process.”

He said that, on the eve of the elections, in which 10 candidates will compete – among them, the head of state, Nicolás Maduro – “the commitment to democratic principles, mutual respect and tolerance must prevail.”

Four former presidents of the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA) will travel to Venezuela on Wednesday, July 24, to show solidarity with the Venezuelan people in the presidential elections scheduled for July 28.

Vicente Fox of Mexico, Mireya Moscoso of Panama, Miguel Angel Rodriguez of Costa Rica, Jorge Tuto Quiroga of Bolivia, as well as former Colombian Vice President Marta Lucia Ramirez, will be present on election day, IDEA said in a statement on Saturday.
