Watch the video: Millions of driver’s licenses will have to be replaced in 2022 – find out when yours will be due.

From 2022, older driving licenses will no longer be valid in Germany. Then millions of drivers and motorcyclists will have to exchange their driving licenses, affecting 43 million Germans.
In order to be able to cope with this huge number, the exchange periods were staggered over different years.
Driving licenses issued following 2013 already have an expiry date under number 4b.
The date is missing on older driver’s licenses.
If issued before or on December 31, 1998, it is graded according to the year of birth. From now on, these driving licenses can be exchanged.
If the date of issue falls between 1953 and 1958, you must exchange your driving license by January 19, 2022.
If you were born between 1959 and 1964, you must exchange your driving license by January 19, 2023. And so forth …
If the driver’s license was issued following or on January 1, 1999, it is graded according to the year of issue.
If the driver’s license was issued between 1999 and 2001, the driver’s license must be exchanged by January 19, 2026.
Anyone who acquired the license between 2012 and 2013 must first have exchanged their driving license by 2033.
The expiry date only ends the validity of the document. The driver’s license remains in force.
