News from UCHE YARA, Oskar Haag, KeKe uvm

I only play it for real! The sentence for the Austrian Music Week comes from Anton Newcombe.

If you’re hanging out in the Lower Austrian Mostviertel during the summer weeks, or if you’re just planning a day trip there: Scheibbs is your place to be. Pretty sure if you are interested in exchanging ideas regarding and working on music together. Organized since 2016 the association rehearsal room Scheibbs the INTERTONALE, which sees itself as a seminar and festival for music. Once a year, musicians from Austria – and other countries – and an interested audience come together and go on a journey of discovery.

This year’s INTERTONALE was opened last weekend with a concert by Sigrid Horn, since then the “Daily Sessions” have been taking place until July 14th. And on Friday, July 15, there will be a final concert by the INTERTONALE ensembles. But even following the INTERTONALE, the Scheibbs rehearsal room offers a wide-ranging cultural programme:

If you are traveling a bit further south in Austria next weekend, namely in Graz, a very good music and discourse program on the topic of transition is waiting for you there as well. That Elevate Festival takes place in its 18th edition from July 13th to 17th. Special Class Incentives: Peaches! Alyona Alyona! Catnap!

And finally back in Austria, Anton Newcombe and his excellent The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Think of an ecstatic-crying icon here.

Back to the current Austrian music videos:

Oskar Haag – „The Summer We Need“

There was a time when you might sing songs by Oskar Hague found free for all on Soundcloud. Songs like the surpassing debut single “Stargazing” or the recently released “The Summer We Need”. Of course those songs are gone now, not for Oskar, but for our availability, the way it’s unromantic when building a great career.

Apart from that, it might also be nice to have the extravagant talent of this young musician presented in bits and pieces, sometimes very slim with the first single mentioned, sometimes including Beirut’s romance on the second song “Black Dress”, or now, in anticipation of it , how it will sound with a band, on “The Summer We Need”. The next Oskar Haag we need well, and then with a video that director Xavier Dolan should have liked with its androgynous, youthful, stylish beauty. Everything done right once more.

UCHE YARA (Solo) – „Baby Boy“ (Live at Belvedere Museum Wien / Diffus)

The internet reveals everything, the internet reveals nothing. At least not much regarding a very new, very good musician, especially one who comes from Austria, although we usually like to talk regarding the “small world”. Oh well. Anyone who saw Bilderbuch live in the last few weeks was hopefully there early enough to see the excellent support act, CHILDHOOD. The web gave us this much: UCHE YARA is 19 years old, comes from Linz and that’s where her songs come from. She has an excellent live band that takes all of her soul, R’n’B and experimental influences to rock ‘n’ roll time travel. Guitars are there too.

UCHE YARA reveals at least a little bit regarding himself. Her Spotify account does not yet list her own tracks, but she does list song recommendations from the musician. These include songs by Little Simz, Radiohead, Pond, Tyler, The Creator and David Bowie. Mix that together in your head or take a look at the live session at the Belvedere that UCHE YARA recorded solo for Diffusmagazin. One to watch!

Mavi Phoenix – „Grass And The Sun” (Live Donauinselfest 2022)“

Usually the hits, the obviously big chart things, are released as live versions. Mavi Phoenix but has chosen the song from his live set from the FM4 stage at the Donauinselfest 2022 that is the most important to him on the new album “Marlon”: “Grass And The Sun”.

When he released it as a single – many months ago now – it wasn’t so clear (to us!) where it would go with Marlon as a person and with Marlon and the music. Written in moments of upheaval, Marlon has now placed the quiet song between the loud siblings “Leaving”, “Nothing Good” or “Tokyo Drift” in the live set. The fact that this is so far away from the usual sound of the new record is what makes it so special. And on stage it was the most beautiful moment of tears of the evening.

KeKe – “Intro”

The queen is back. For those who have been living under a rock for the past week – no offense, a social media detox from time to time is still the big recommendation – here is the reminder for the song for the month of July. In KeKe‘s “Intro” has so many nice lines to memorize, here are a few suggestions:

“They whisper I can’t do my job / if you don’t protect a smuggling person, you can’t do your job”

“But I don’t give a fuck and switch between Irish folk and hyperpop / between emo punk hardstyle or drill / switch styles as I want – write my own film”

“Didn’t learn anything – all I know is just music / Shit is real no matter what happens – I’m still in love”
