Early next week, Sony plans to announce a new video game subscription service for the PlayStation platform currently known as Spartacus, which is its answer to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, according to Bloomberg.
Previous reports suggest that Spartacus might be a combination of Sony’s two existing subscription services, PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now.
Bloomberg says the company wants to launch the service that includes popular and recent games. But the upcoming game may not include God of War: Ragnarok.
The service is expected to have three different levels, offering different games at different prices. The first level is expected to be very similar to the current PlayStation Plus subscription.
Later levels add PlayStation 4 and 5 games, as well as access to extended trials and the ability to stream games online.
Previous reports have also stated that the top level might include a library of classic games from systems such as the PlayStation 2 and PSP.

PlayStation Plus: gives access to group games, some discounts, and some free games per month.
– PlayStation Now: Allows you to play a list of selected PS4, PS3 and PS2 games either via cloud games or download (the available options depend on the selected game).
Sony unveils PlayStation subscription next week
It can be hard to compare these services with Xbox Game Pass, which has more than 25 million subscribers and lets you play flagship Xbox and PC games on launch day – most of which are published by Microsoft – along with a list of third-party games.
And it looks like Sony and Spartacus are looking to give PlayStation users a service they can be excited regarding. But reports make it seem like it’s relying more on the old PlayStation’s massive roster, rather than the new successes of today.
It is also not clear how much it might cost. PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus currently cost $60 per year each when purchasing an annual subscription, or $120 combined. This is the same price as a standard Game Pass subscription, and slightly lower than Game Pass Ultimate. As a result, Sony has plenty of wiggle room when it comes to pricing.
There is also the issue of transfer, where you can buy a PlayStation Plus subscription for several months or even years. It is not known how the company deals with users who do not sign up for a monthly subscription.
And it appears that Spartacus may have an equivalent level. But there may be price changes that should be taken into account.
The PlayStation platform has outpaced the Xbox platform in recent years. But Sony lags behind Microsoft’s efforts in the streaming market.
