King Saud Medical City clarified that body dysmorphic disorder is a mental disorder that causes the patient to become preoccupied with a physical defect that is noticeable or unnoticeable by others, indicating that patients with this disorder view themselves as ugly and unacceptable.
The city pointed out that the most prominent symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder are: frequent looking at the mirror, trying to hide certain parts of the body, excessive comparing oneself to others, in addition to avoiding social activities.
She indicated that the treatment of body dysmorphic disorder lies in cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps the patient to challenge negative thoughts and learn behaviors aimed at improving mental health, in addition to taking medications used to treat depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
