News 24 | Including depression and stress… A study reveals serious consequences of procrastination

A recent study conducted by researchers in Sweden revealed that procrastination or postponing work and assignments causes physical and psychological damage to students, the most important of which is stress, tension and depression.

The study was conducted by researchers at the universities of “Uppsala” and “Sofiahamet”, and the “Karolinska Institute”, during which 3525 students were followed up for more than two years, before the results of the study were announced recently following examination and scrutiny.

The study showed that students who had a medium or high level of “procrastination” showed symptoms of depression, anxiety, tension and stress, lack of good sleep and loneliness.

She explained that with the high level of procrastination among students, the matter did not stop at psychological symptoms, but physical symptoms appeared, including pain in the upper and lower extremities, the neck, and the upper and lower back.

The researchers pointed out that since cases of procrastination are common among university and higher institute students, these results may be important for better understanding the factors affecting students’ health.

The researchers warned that neglecting the matter and not intervening to address the state of procrastination among students may lead them to bad daily practices, such as smoking, drinking alcohol and neglecting food, and the matter may reach the use of cannabis.
