King Fahd Medical City clarified what is meant by “trachoma” infection, the symptoms that appear on the eyes because of it, and how to prevent it and treat it in case of infection.
The city indicated that trachoma is a bacterial infection that affects the eye and is transmitted through contact with the eyes, eyelids, nose and throat secretions, and may be transmitted indirectly through the use of infected tissues.
She pointed out that the symptoms of this infection include irritation of the eyes and eyelids and puffiness of the eyelid, in addition to pain and secretions from the eyes and sensitivity to light.
She indicated that preventive measures once morest infection include washing the face and hands constantly, not touching the eyes, fighting flies, getting rid of waste and environmental improvements. As for the treatment, it is antibiotics in the early stages and surgery in advanced cases.
