The United States announced the monitoring of 9 cases of monkeypox in 7 states, at a time when the World Health Organization called on countries to increase methods of monitoring infection with the virus.
And the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that cases of monkeypox were detected in the states of Massachusetts, Florida, Utah, Washington, California, Virginia and New York.
Today, Thursday, the World Health Organization confirmed the discovery of regarding 200 cases of monkeypox and more than 100 suspected cases, and urged countries to increase monitoring of the infectious disease.
The chief epidemiologist at the organization, Maria Van Kerkhove, said that so far, infections have been recorded in more than 20 countries where the disease is not endemic, and that the organization expects more, urging countries to increase surveillance.
The virus is endemic in African countries, namely Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria, but its recent outbreak in countries where it does not usually spread has raised many concerns.
