Newcastle puts forward in the English League Cup final

Newcastle United put a foot in the English Football League Cup final, following beating Southampton 1-0 on Tuesday in the first leg of the semi-finals.

Newcastle, owned by a Saudi investment fund, scored the winning goal in the 73rd minute through Brazilian Joelinton.

Southampton thought he had equalized two minutes later through Adam Armstrong, but the homeowners’ joy did not last long following the video assistant referee “VAR” canceled the goal due to a handball (75).

The match witnessed the dismissal of Southampton’s Croatian defense heart, Doyi Kalita-Car, following receiving two yellow cards (86).

The return match will be held next Tuesday, the 31st of this month.

Since entering the era of Saudi ownership, Newcastle has made a series of contracts to replenish its ranks, so this season it was able to compete strongly, as it currently occupies third place in the league with 39 points, 11 points behind leaders Arsenal and six points from Manchester City II.

Newcastle, seeking to qualify for its first final since 1999, finished last season in eleventh place.

Newcastle is competing strongly to qualify for the Champions League, which it has missed since the 1998-99 season.

And Southampton detonated the biggest surprises in the League Cup when it eliminated Manchester City, the English champion, from the quarter-finals, by defeating it 2-0.

In the event that his victory is confirmed, Newcastle will meet the winner between Nottingham Forest and Manchester United, who meet in the first leg on Wednesday.

Newcastle aspires to win its first “big” title in nearly 68 years, when it was crowned the FA Cup in 1955.
