Striker Joelinton won a penalty and scored in the first half to lead Newcastle United to a 3-0 victory at Leicester City, and advance to second place in the English Premier League today, Monday.
Defender Daniel Amarte caused a disastrous start for Leicester when he fouled Joelinton following 86 seconds, for the referee to award a penalty kick. Striker Chris Wood rushed in to score successfully.
The participation of the 31-year-old New Zealander Wood, who played for Leicester between 2013 and 2015, came due to Callum Wilson’s illness.
Miguel Almiron added the second goal in the seventh minute, as he launched into the field from the right side and exchanged passing the ball with Bruno Guimaraes before he fired into the goal.
And with the league back following the World Cup hiatus, there was little to please Leicester fans following the Christmas celebrations, and Joelinton made it 3-0 with a header from a corner kick in the 32nd minute.
Zambian Patson Dhaka, Leicester striker, demanded a penalty kick in the first half following a collision with goalkeeper Nick Pope, but the referee ignored the matter, and despite Jamie Vardy’s participation in the ranks of Leicester in the second half, the team did not do much, as Newcastle held out to win.
Newcastle advanced to second place with 33 points above defending champions Manchester City, who face Leeds United on Wednesday.
